How to Install Bolt-On Retractable Jet Ski Tie Down Straps

Quick Summary: To install bolt-on retractable jet ski tie-down straps, select a secure mounting location on your trailer frame, drill a 1/2-inch hole, and fasten the ratchet housing using a bolt, washer, and nut. To use, push the release handle all the way down, hit the button to pull the strap to your PWC’s stern eye, and pump the handle to tighten.

Strapinno’s bolt-on retractable tie-down straps are available in two styles: Two Way Transom Straps and Dual Lock Transom Straps. In this guide, we will show you exactly how to install both models safely onto your watercraft trailer.

While regular operational guides cover how to center your watercraft, this technical guide focuses on the tools, measurements, and steps required to install your bolt-on straps seamlessly so you can get on the water faster.

Instructions can be boring, so we have included a video review and walk-through to make things easier. This basic bolt-on setup applies to both our Two-Way Transom Straps and Dual Lock Transom Straps.

Note: The video below demonstrates the process using the Dual Lock model.

Step 1: Measure where to put the bolt on

Put the strap up against the trailer and measure where to put the bolt on. The handle is rubber-coated so don’t worry that it will leave any mark on your jet ski.

Measure where to put the retractable strap on the trailer.

Step 2: Drill out a hole for the bolt

Prepare a ½ inch drill bit for the bolt.

Step 3: Tighten the nut and bolt

Pop the bolt into the retractable strap and tighten it up with the nut and washer. Make sure the strap can pull out nice and straight. If you need a hand, a bracket can help with that. Finally, just make sure everything is mounted securely and you’re good to move on to the next step!

Step 4: Pull the strap

Dual lock transom straps

For dual lock transom straps, push the ratchet handle all the way down, hit the release button, pull the strap tight against your jet ski, and lock it in place.

Press the button of the retractable strap and pull the strap up to the jet ski and lock in.
The strap is pulled out from the retractable strap and ready to lock in onto the jet ski.

Two way transom straps

For two way transom straps, pull up on the release latch and move the handle to the 90-degree release slot. Pull the strap out to the required length and attach the hook to your jet ski’s anchor point.

Step 5: Tighten your strap

  • For Dual Lock Straps: Simply pump the ratchet handle back and forth a few times until the strap feels nice and secure, then fold the handle flat to lock it.
  • For Two-Way Straps: Pull up the release latch again, start cranking the handle to build tension, and then push the handle all the way down into the locked position.

Step 6: Release the strap

Dual lock straps

Bring the handle back to the release position, press the button, and let the strap auto-retract!

Two way straps

Open the handle fully to the 90-degree angle, and the strap will automatically retract on its own.

If you prefer a hook to hook setup…

If you prefer a hook-to-hook tie-down setup over a permanent mount, Strapinno’s Two-Way Transom Straps offer unique dual-functionality.

To convert them, simply use the included bolt set to attach the extension strap directly to the ratchet body. This instantly transforms your bolt-on unit into a portable, dual-hook strap ready for any standard anchor point!
