How to Use Boat Trailer Transom Retractable Tie Down Straps for Jet Ski and PWC Trailers
Quick Summary: To use short boat trailer transom retractable ratchet straps on a Jet Ski or PWC trailer, open the ratchet handle to a 90-degree position to release the webbing. Secure one hook to a solid trailer anchor point and the other hook to the stern eye or rear tow loop of the watercraft. Crank the handle back and forth to apply vertical tension, then lock the handle flat. To release, open the handle back to 90 degrees, unhook both ends, and let the strap automatically retract into the housing.
We have already covered our universal guide on how to tie down a jet ski and our technical guide on how to install bolt-on retractable jet ski tie-down straps. Now, let’s explore how to properly use non-mounted boat trailer transom retractable ratchet straps (available in 1 in. x 2.5 ft. and 1 in. x 4 ft. sizes) to secure the rear of your watercraft and prevent dangerous highway bouncing.
Step-by-step guide: securing your PWC with boat trailer transom straps
Step 1: Open the ratchet handle to 90°
Before pulling out the webbing, lift the release latch and open the ratchet handle to a precise 90-degree angle. This disengages the locking gears, so you can pull the strap out smoothly.

Step 2: Hook both ends on the trailer and the jet ski
With the ratchet handle opened to a 90-degree position, the strap is in release mode, allowing the webbing to pull out smoothly. We recommend keeping the handle opening facing downward for easier operation.
Attach the bottom hook firmly to a solid anchor point on your boat trailer frame. Then, pull the upper hook vertically and secure it directly onto the stern eye (tow loop) at the rear of your jet ski.

Step 3: Tighten the strap and lock it
Crank the handle up and down to tighten the strap. You can adjust the buckle position as needed based on your trailer setup. For better downward tension, we recommend keeping the buckle closer to the lower trailer anchor point when possible.
Once the strap is completely tight and there is no slack, push the handle all the way down into its flat, locked position to prevent accidental release during transit.
Step 4: Release
When you arrive at the boat ramp, unloading is effortless. Simply lift the release latch, open the handle back up to the 90-degree angle, and unhook the straps from your jet ski and trailer. The internal mechanism will instantly trigger, automatically retracting the loose webbing cleanly back into the housing. No tangles, no manual rolling required!
